The Exponential Changemakers 2021 program focused on rethinking how we live by challenging the design of cities and the way natural resources are used. Under the WaterTech & Smart Cities theme, the initiative addressed key urban and environmental challenges facing Guatemala. Over the last two decades, Guatemala has experienced rapid urban growth, with more than half of its population now living in urban areas. While this has created new opportunities, it has also intensified challenges related to housing, mobility, and access to essential services, leading to fragmented lifestyles across cities. At the same time, water management has become a critical issue. Despite the country’s abundant freshwater resources, only a small percentage is used effectively, and limited wastewater treatment continues to impact ecosystems and communities. Through this program, Progreso X collaborated with global startups to identify innovative solutions that promote more sustainable, efficient, and resilient cities. The initiative reflects a necessary shift—from exploiting resources toward creating long-term value through sustainability and smarter urban living.
